MIDWEEK MESSAGE – May 29, 2024

This past weekend, I was blessed with an opportunity to house and dog sit for a friend who lived near the beach.  It was truly a blessing because I miss having a dog’s companionship.  Fortunately, I spent time with Bowie, a loving dog who, although quite old, was as affectionate as a puppy and a great companion.

The other blessing was walking about three miles along the coast at dawn. The sky was clear the first couple of mornings, and the sun coming up was a wonderful sight and good for my soul.

But the greatest blessing was the morning when the fog was thick, and you couldn’t see very far in front of you. Walking into the fog on the pier that went out over the water, I felt like I was walking into the presence of God.

We breathe in air every second, and although we cannot see, smell, touch, hear, or taste it, we never doubt its existence. Air is always there, always doing what it does — keeping us physically alive.

For me, God is like the air. I cannot see, touch, smell, or taste It—in other words, It cannot be experienced by our senses—yet I believe It is all around us, always present and in everything.

Being engulfed by the fog, I could feel the air I usually take for granted.  Then, I began to feel as if the fog was God, which I was experiencing in a way I had never experienced before.  That damp, cold, grey day was an unexpected blessing I will never forget.

Life is so often like that. It is easy to be grateful when life is like a clear sunny day, but it is often in the foggy grey times, when we can’t see what is ahead of us, that we develop the trust to move forward and find The Power Within Us,  which is better than anything we receive from the world.
