MIDWEEK MESSAGE – June 30, 2021

Forgiveness – a topic that I discuss often because it is so important. It is also one that we may sometimes be unaware that is a serious issue for us. We are all aware of the people or things that get us angry, but it is often the unforgiveness of people, places, institutions, or ourselves that we hang onto which becomes problematic.

The parents that did not treat us lovingly and the kind that we just can’t seem to forgive. Or maybe it’s an ex-spouse that hurt us so deeply, we continue to carry the hurt into our current lives. These kinds of instances of unforgiveness are the real challenges because we often bury them so deep, we do not realize we are still carrying these feelings around.

Maybe we don’t want to let it go because we think that if we forgive, we are condoning what was done. Forgiveness is not condoning. It is forgiving the person but not the act. This is not as easy as it sounds, and it takes a lot of spiritual work. Forgiving others and ourselves sets us free to become all that we are meant to be.

Therapy is good, but nothing can heal the deep wounds within our hearts like spiritual work. Often it takes the guidance of a spiritual mentor, guru, sponsor, minister, or rabbi. It is not easy, but the rewards are a peace that passes all understanding, a happiness that can produce gratitude even in troubling times, and an ability to truly love our fellow humans.

It is worth the effort – I promise!
